What is Scoliosis?

Scoliosis is a condition of the spine where curves develop from side to side (lateral) and can be said to look like a “C” or “S” shape. The vast majority of scoliosis cases are idiopathic in nature which means of unknown origin, although recent research suggests a strong genetic link affecting the control of the growth in the spine. Scoliosis is most often diagnosed in adolescents, but can be found in infants, juveniles, and of course adults.

Early Diagnosis of Scoliosis Impacts Outcomes

Depending on the cause of scoliosis and the age of the patient, the curves can be very unstable and worsen rapidly which makes early diagnosis essential to determining the appropriate treatment. Even in adults the curve(s) can progress slowly every year with more rapid changes occurring around menopausal years in females.

Treating Scoliosis with the Scolibrace

The ScoliBrace is a hard corrective brace designed using 3D technology to ensure that the brace targets the individual curve with precision. The ScoliBrace is an asymmetrical brace designed with the intension of curve correction. In my 5 years of using the ScoliBrace, I have seen not only curve stabilization in my adolescent patients, but significant curve correction in the vast majority of cases. Adults with scoliosis who I have fitted with the ScoliBrace have reported significantly less pain, improved posture, and curve stabilization which are essential maintaining an active lifestyle.

Diagnosis of Scoliosis

Scoliosis is diagnosed with a physical exam and x-rays. The most common signs of abnormal curvature(s) in the spine are uneven shoulders, “winging” of the shoulder blade, and asymmetry of the ribcage and waistline. When bending forward, you will be able to see the rotation of the spine and the asymmetrical rib hump even with relatively small curves. If these tests are positive, x-rays are taken to definitively diagnose the condition and to quantify the size of the curve(s). In some cases, the need for additional imaging such as MRI’s may be necessary to determine the cause of the abnormal curvature(s).

Scoliosis Treatment

Treatment varies depending on the age of the patient, the size of the curve(s), and the cause of the scoliosis. For idiopathic scoliosis, which is the most common type, treatment for curves between 10 and 20 degrees in infants, juveniles, and growing adolescents will often involve close monitoring to determine if the curve(s) are worsening along with specific exercises and stretching designed to improve the curve.

If the curve(s) progress beyond 20 degrees in a growing child then bracing is indicated to halt the progression or in some cases try to decrease the size of the curve(s). If the curve(s) are larger than 45 to 50 degrees, surgery must be considered depending on the age of the patient and the location. For larger curves in younger patients, it may be beneficial to attempt bracing to halt the progression of the curve to delay the need for surgery until skeletal maturity.
